EFFECTS OF PROPOLIS ON IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME

Effects of Propolis Supplementation on The Severity of Disease In Irritable Bowel Syndrome Subjects: A Randomized, Double-Blind Clinical Trial

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional gastrointestinal (GI) disease revealed by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel fixation. At the same time, no specific markers or laboratory parameters are available yet to diagnose the disease. A clinical trial carried at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences evaluated the effects of propolis on 56 patients with IBS. They were administered 450 mg of propolis extract (containing 90 mg of the polyphenols and 67 mg flavonoids) twice daily for six weeks. This study showed that propolis supplementation increased with abdominal pain improvement, anxiety state, and bowel habits. The overall score of quality of life and its domains in the propolis group was statistically significant. The scientists concluded that propolis supplementation could be used as adjunctive therapy in IBS disease to reduce abdominal pain and anxiety.* *Miryan, M., Alavinejad, P., Abbaspour, M., Soleimani, D. and Ostadrahimi, A., 2021.
