Propolis Suppresses UV-Induced Photoaging in Human Skin through Directly Targeting Phosphoinositide 3-Kinase

Research conducted at Yonsei University, South Korea, during 2020, investigated the effect of propolis on ultraviolet (UV)-mediated skin aging and its underlying molecular mechanism. The scientists revealed that propolis suppressed UV-induced matrix metalloproteinase protein production in human dermal fibroblasts and reduced UV-induced expression by blocking collagen degradation in human skin tissues. Besides, the results showed that propolis could directly suppress phosphoinositide 3-kinase activity, with preferential selectivity over other kinases. The active compounds of propolis (caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAFE), quercetin, and apigenin) were determined to suppress phosphoinositide 3-kinase activity. These results demonstrated that propolis shows anti-skin-aging effects through direct inhibition of phosphoinositide 3-kinase activity.*
